  • THE COLOUR, CONFIGURATION, SIZE, AND LOCATION OF ALL TRAFFIC SIGNS FOR HIGHWAYS OTHER THAN EXPRESSWAYS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CODE OF PRACTICE FOR ROAD SIGNS, IRC:67-2010, OR AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS.

  • IN THE ABSENCE OF ANY DETAILS OR FOR ANY MISSING DETAILS, THE SIGNS SHALL BE PROVIDED AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER.

  • LOW-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE(LDPE) IS SANDWICHED BETWEEN TWO ALUMINIUM COMPOSITE MATERIALS.

TRAFFIC SIGNS HAVING RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING:-

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • THE RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING USED ON THE SIGN SHALL CONSIST OF WHITE OR COLOURED SHEETING.

  • IT SHALL HAVE A SMOOTH OUTER SURFACE, WHICH HAS THE PROPERTY OF RETRO-REFLECTION OVER ITS ENTIRE SURFACE. IT SHALL BE WEATHER-RESISTANT AND SHOW COLOUR FASTNESS



HIGH INTENSITY ENCAPSULATED LENS TYPE:

  • THIS SHEETING SHALL BE OF ENCAPSULATED LENS TYPE CONSISTING OF SPHERICAL GLASS LENS ELEMENTS ADHERING TOA SYNTHETIC RESIN AND ENCAPSULATED BY A FLEXIBLE, TRANSPARENT WATERPROOF PLASTIC HAVING A SMOOTH SURFACE.


MICRO-PRISMATIC TYPE

  • THIS SHEETING SHALL CONSIST OF FLEXIBLE WHITE OR COLOURED PRISMATIC LENS ELEMENTSWITHA DISTINCTIVE INTERLOCKING SEAL PATTERNS AND ORIENTATION MARKS VISIBLE FROM THE FACE OF A SMOOTH SURFACE.

  • THESHEETINGSHALL HAVE A PRE-COATED ADHESIVE PROTECTED BY AN EASILY REMOVABLE LINER.



MESSAGES/ BORDERS

  • THE MESSAGES (LEGENDS, LETTERS, NUMERALS, ETC) SHALL BE MADE OUT OF WHITE RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING, EXCEPT THOSE IN BLACK, WHICH SHALL BE MADE OF NON-REFLECTIVE FILM.

  • BLACK SYMBOLS SHALL ALSO BE MADE OF NON-REFLECTIVE FILM. RED BORDERS AND OTHER SECONDARY COLOURED AREAS SHALL BE CREATED BY APPLYING COLOURED OVERLAY FILM TO WHITE RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING.

COLOUR FOR SIGNS

  • SIGN SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH RETRO-REFLECTING SHEETING/OVERLAY FILM/SCREENING INK.

  • THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE SIGN SHALL BE PAINTED GREY.

  • THE REGULATORY/PROHIBITORY & WARNING SIGNS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH WHITE BACKGROUND & RED BORDER.

  • THE LEGENDS/SYMBOLS FOR THIS SIGN SHALL BE BLACK.

  • THEMANDATORYSIGN SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH BLUE BACKGROUND AND WHITE SYMBOL/LETTER

# THE COLOUR CHOSEN FOR INFORMATORYOR GUIDE SIGNS:-

  • FOR NATIONAL HIGHWAY& STATE HIGHWAY:- SIGNS SHALL BE OF GREEN BACKGROUND.

  • FOREXPRESSWAY:- SIGNS SHALL BE OF BLUE BACKGROUND WITH WHITE BORDER.



SIZE OF LETTERS

  • THE LETTER SIZE SHOULD BE CHOSEN WITH DUE REGARD TO SPEED, CLASSIFICATION & LOCATION OF THE ROAD SO THAT SIGN IS OF ADEQUATE SIZE WITHOUT BEING TOO LARGE OR OBSTRUCTIVE.

ACCEPTANCE LIMIT FOR SIZES OF LETTERS


# FOR ADVANCE DIRECTION SIGNS FOR NON-URBAN ROADS

  • FOREXPRESSWAYS/NATIONAL/STATE HIGHWAYS:- 150MM IN HEIGHT i.e. “X”

  • FOROTHERROADS:- 100MM IN HEIGHT

  • IN THE CASE OF OVERHEAD SIGNS THE HEIGHT OF THE LETTERS SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF 300MM.

  • THICKNESS OF THE LETTER:- 1/6 – 1/5 OF THE HEIGHT

  • THE SIZE OF THE INITIAL UPPERCASE LETTER- IS1-1/3 TIMES THE HEIGHT.

  • IN URBAN AREAS:- LETTER SIZE SHALL BE 100MM IN ALL DIRECTION SIGNS

  • FOR EASY AND BETTER COMPREHENSION, THE WORD MESSAGE SHOULD BE WRITTEN IN UPPERCASE ONLY

SIZE OF LETTERS

  • LETTER SIZE ON DEFINITION PLATES ATTACHED WITH NORMAL SIZE SIGNS SHOULD BE 100 OR 150MM.

  • IN CASE OF SMALL SIGNS IT SHOULD BE 100MM.

  • WHERE THE MESSAGE IS LONG, IT SHOULD BE BROKEN INTO TWO LINES & SIZE OF THE LETTERS MAY BE

  • VARIED IN THE LINES SO THE DEFINITION PLATES NOT TOO LARGE

  • THE LETTERING ON THE DEFINITION PLATES WILL BE ALL IN UPPERCASE LETTERS.

WARRANTY & DURABILITY

  • RETRO-REFLECTANCE OF THE RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING OR MICRO-PRISMATIC SHEETING – 7 YEARS

  • HIGH-INTENSITY GRADE – 5 YEARS

  • ALL SIGNS SHOULD BE DATED DURING FABRICATION TO INDICATE THE START OF THE WARRANTY.

INSTALLATION

  • THE TRAFFIC SIGNS SHALL BE MOUNTED ON SUPPORT POST, WHICH MAY BE OF GI PIPES(RECTANGULAR OR SQUARE HOLLOW SECTION)

  • IT SHOULD BE CONSTRUCTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT RESISTS THE NORMAL STROM, WIND LOAD OR DISPLACEMENT BY VANDALISM

  • SIGNS UP TO AN AREA 0.9 M² SHALL BE MOUNTED IN A SINGLE POST

  • AREA>0.9 M² TWO OR MORE SUPPORT

MEASUREMENTS FOR PAYMENT

  • THE MEASUREMENT OF STANDARD CAUTIONARY, MANDATORY AND INFORMATION SIGNS SHALL BE IN NUMBERS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SIGNS SUPPLIED AND FIXED.

  • WHILE FOR DIRECTION AND PLACE IDENTIFICATION SIGNS, THESE SHALL BE MEASURED BY AREA IN SQUARE METRES.

  • THE WORK SHALL CONSIST OF FABRICATION, SUPPLY & INSTALLATION OF OVERHEAD TRAFFIC SIGNS ON ROAD.



HEIGHT OF OVERHEAD SIGNS

  • OVERHEAD SIGNS SHALL PROVIDE A VERTICAL CLEARANCE OF NOT LESS THAN 5.5M OVER THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE PAVEMENT AND SHOULDERS EXCEPT WHERE LESSER VERTICAL CLEARANCE IS USED FOR THE DESIGN OF OTHER STRUCTURES.

  • THE VERTICAL CLEARANCE TO OVERHEAD SIGN STRUCTURES OR SUPPORTS NEED NOT BE GREATER THAN 300 MM IN EXCESS OF THE MINIMUM DESIGN CLEARANCE OF OTHER STRUCTURES.

  • ALUMINIUMALLOYORGALVANIZEDSTEEL TO BE USED AS TRUSS DESIGN SUPPORTS SHALL CONFORM TO RELEVANCE.

  • ALUMINIUM SHEETS ARE USED FOR ROAD SIGNS, THEY SHALL BE OF SMOOTH, HARD AND CORROSION-RESISTANT ALUMINIUM ALLOY.

  • THE THICKNESS OF THE SHEET SHALL BE RELATED TO THE SIZE OF THE SIGN WITH THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF THE SHEET AS 1.5 MM.

  • HIGH STRENGTH BOLTS& PRECISION BOLTS, NUTSETC.

  • PLATES AND SUPPORT SECTIONS FOR SIGNPOSTS.

  • THE OVERHEAD SIGNS SHALL BE REFLECTORS WITH HIGH-INTENSITY RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING PREFERABLY OF ENCAPSULATED LENS TYPE.

INSTALLATION

  • IT SHALL BE FABRICATED AND ERECTED AS PER DETAILS GIVEN IN THE PLANS.

  • SIGNPOSTS, THEIR FOUNDATIONS AND SIGN MOUNTINGS SHALL BE SO CONSTRUCTED AS TO HOLD SIGNS IN A PROPER AND PERMANENT POSITION TO ADEQUATELY RESIST SWAYING IN THE WIND OR DISPLACEMENT BY VANDALISM.

  • THE WORK OF CONSTRUCTION OF FOUNDATION FOR SIGN SUPPORTS INCLUDING EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL, FORMS, STEEL REINFORCEMENT, CONCRETE AND ITS PLACEMENT.

  • AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF SIGNS IS COMPLETE, THE SIGN SHALL BE INSPECTED BY THE ENGINEER. IF SPECULAR REFLECTION IS APPARENT ON ANY SIGN, ITS POSITIONING SHALL BE ADJUSTED BY THE CONTRACTOR TO ELIMINATE OR MINIMIZE THIS CONDITION.


MEASUREMENTS FOR PAYMENT

  • ALUMINIUM OR STEEL OVERHEAD SIGN STRUCTURE WILL BE MEASURED FOR PAYMENT BY THE SPECIFIC UNIT (EACH) COMPLETE IN PLACE OR FOR EACH COMPONENT OF THE OVERHEAD SIGN STRUCTURE AS INDICATED IN THE BILL OF QUANTITIES AND THE DETAILED DRAWING(S).

  • FLAT SHEET ALUMINIUM SIGNS WITH RETRO-REFLECTIVE SHEETING THEREON SHALL BE MEASURED FOR PAYMENT BY THE SQUARE METRE FOR EACH THICKNESS, COMPLETE IN PLACE.
